Let’s Talk about Money!

Sheffield Voices wanted to deliver workshops in the learning disability community as we knew that people were struggling with the cost of living crisis, struggling to understand what money is and how to manage it and we knew that many people in our community were being targeted by scammers and people who financially abuse them.

Our money project, funded by Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert, began in  August 2022. We developed a team including Mike Mcaughtrie, Liaison Officer for the Illegal Money Lending Team in England, Amy Dyson our Head of Mate and Hate Crime, Andrew Smith our Head of Scams, Alan and Sandra Collins, Katie Needham and Sheffield Voices Staff Kathryn Littlewood and Kelly Scargill.

The project has been a real success in terms of supporting people in our community to understand money better and to know when they are being scammed or abused.

We delivered our money sessions in seven-day services, 4 We Speak You Listen events totalling approximately 24 delivered  sessions to a total of approximately 200 people.

What we found was that:

Many people do not have control over their money. Most of those people who do not have control would like to have control.

Most people do not use Debit Cards. Out of the people who do not have a Debit Card, most people said they want to have one.

The people who did have Debit Cards, enjoyed using them and felt much safer with them.

All the people we spoke to did not know where money comes from.

A large percentage of the people we spoke to had been scammed out of money in various ways.

Most of the people who had been scammed have lost control over their finances because of this and money is now managed by other people.

Most people did not know how to tell or how to report scams.

People really enjoyed playing our games, especially Ow’Muchopoly. Special Thanks to Sam Fearn for designing it for us!

Next Steps

We are really proud of the tools we have created and want to share them so that other groups can run these sessions, so we have created fully interactive downloadable workshops and products that anyone can use.

There are three, two hour workshops included in this pack.

Feel free to pick and choose which elements you wish to use.

Included in this pack is:

A printable workshop plan for all three workshops including all links and information what is needed to deliver the workshops

We hope you have fun using our products!
